Who was Best of the Midwest (BAMF)?

After an extended summer sans disc MagnUM returned to the field for its annual fall tournament, Best of the Midwest (BAMF). MagnUM split its returners and most promising rookies into two teams, both hell bent on meeting in the finals. Although, team Spaghetti/Suck didn’t hold up its end of the bargain, the returning MagnUMites are optimistic in the wake of 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

All of the action started Saturday morning around 10 as the teams started arriving at Mitchel Field. Indiana Hoosiermama’s sent two teams and Michigan State’s Burning Couch sent two teams. Central Michigan Stallin Disc, Toledo Rodeo, and Miami Boogey Men also contributed teams to one of the best tournament fields ever. In the end, though, the Boogey Men of Miami prevented a Michigan Cobra/Mongoose title (not to mention a Doug Sharp Triple Crown). In the 3rd place game is was the Michigan Spaghetti/Suck team with a win over Burning Couch 1.

Highlights from the tournament include (but are not limited to) Dave Fumo, the TD, sleeping through the first round of games on Sunday morning, Derrek Wolbert owning the skies against Burning Couch in one semi-final, and Ollie Hondered doing his best Jon Western Impersonation on Sunday. Tom Haynes’ play was (according to my calculations) impressive while the line calling by Armand Conti and Matt MarcUM were as AK put it “Awesome, much like the churros at BTB.” Oh, did I mention that MagnUM owned the party (although I must admit, I was already out of commission once Indiana showed up).

As for the rookies, the chance to compete against other colleges lit a fire in their shorts and on more than one occasion a layout D or sky goal helped each team succeed. As final cuts approach this rookie class looks like it may have the potential to MagnUM’s best ever. Next up is Glory Days on October 13-14. MagnUM will likely take a large squad of returners and its most promising rookies before final cuts.
