FAQ

Q. What is Ultimate Frisbee?
A. Ultimate is a fast-growing, fast-paced game that’s big in college. Read more about it here.

Q. Why should I play Ultimate?
A. You should play if you miss playing high school sports, you want to stay in shape, or you want to get involved in your school.

Q. Are there club dues? If so, how much does it cost to join?
A. Club dues for the 2009-2010 school year will be $50 per semester.

Q. Are there tryouts?
A. Yes – open tryouts are in the fall. We also have clinics before tryouts begin to get people excited and teach them about the sport. See our calendar for more info.

Q. What can I do to get ready for tryouts?
A. The most important things to do if you want to be on magnUM are run and throw. In tryouts, we mainly look for good athletes who are willing to learn, and show progress during tryouts. Throwing is important, but it will not get you on the team by itself.

If you’re feeling really motivated, you can attend the National Ultimate Training Camp. It’s a week-long summer camp in Amherst, Massachusetts that’s intended to teach high schoolers to play ultimate. It’s a ton of fun, and you will learn a lot.

Q. What equipment is needed?
A. A (really awesome) disc is included with your dues in the Fall. You should come to tryouts dressed to run around, and wearing cleats. Soccer cleats are usually the best, although some people wear football cleats. Metal cleats are not allowed.

Q. What if I can’t make it to tryouts?
A. We take commitment to the team very seriously. However, we do understand that you have other things going on. The most important thing is that you communicate with the captains and coaches.

Q. What if I’m trying out for another sport?
A. If Ultimate is your second choice, we understand. Let us know that you plan on trying out for our team only if you do not make the other team you are trying out for. Again, communication is key.

Q. What’s the deal with the rookie award?
A. It’s true – the best rookie gets a $500 check at the end of the fall season. Matt, Pat, Ollie, and Seth and Carson can attest.

Q. How good is magnUM on a national scale?
A. We have finished in the top ten at College Nationals 8 of the past 10 years and tied for 5th the last two. We think we have the potential this year for our best finish ever.

Q. Does the team travel?
A. We go to many tournaments in warm places around the country, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Austin, Columbus, and Columbia. This leads us to our next question:

Q. Do you guys do anything cool for Spring Break?
A. Two-day tournament, followed by five days in a house two blocks from the beach in Florida with your teammates. Every year produces new stories, always better than last year’s.

Q. Do you have a B team?
A. We have a “developmental team” comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores, augmented with some experienced players who are willing to provide leadership. The Dev Team – known as Reserve – is intended to teach new players the fundamentals necessary for future competition with magnUM.

The coaches of Reserve expect the same amount of commitment to the program and team as the coaches of magnUM. The only differences are that you will not play the same competition or travel as far. Check out their roster here.

Q. How can I find out more about Ultimate?
A. Check out our links page.
