Matt Marcum
Senior - #14

Nickname: MarcUM
Matthew Marcum has been a star defender and playmaker on magnUM for three years. His career at the University of Michigan has been filled with peaks of glory, yet riddled with valleys of despair. He ascends and plummets continuously.
Marcum arrived at the University with a twinkle in his eye and a naïve optimism that is only possessed by freshman college students. His optimism quickly vanished after he was snipped, axed, chopped, taped back together and then finally cut from a rigorous club soccer tryout. Defeated, Marcum spent the rest of his freshman year moping in his dorm room, comforted only by his fridge and his internet.
At some point in time, Marcum ran into a tan, goofy Italian known as Fumo. They shared something special from the beginning, and soon Marcum’s twinkling eyes were restored. Their connection was strong, but what is important is that Fumo introduced Marcum to the game of Ultimate.
Marcum tried out for the extraordinary Michigan Ultimate team, known as magnUM. He made the team and his strong soccer background allowed for an easy transition to the game of Ultimate. Soon he was a rising star and a respected teammate. In December of 2005 he was awarded the prestigious Rookie Award and was handed a one-thousand dollar check. Then he broke his collarbone or something. Then something good happened, but pretty soon after that he did something bad to his shoulder again. This pattern repeats three or four more times, hence the peaks and valleys metaphor.
Right now MarcUM is recovering from a shoulder injury. He is working hard to return to top shape and hone his nasty disc skills. His full strength return is highly anticipated as it will be a huge addition to an already talented team. Look for him to be wreaking havoc on defense, making some showtime plays, and spiking the disc a lot, like a whole lot.
