The Tale of Abosch

For years the kingdom had prospered and enjoyed seven years of bountiful harvest and profitable trade from the sea. The queen who ruled was just and wise, the artisans crafted fine treasures, the peasants bent willingly to their work and the knights of the realm were courageous and merciful as they safeguarded the kingdom. Alas this golden age did end. A great dragon flew over the kingdom, raining fire from the sky and buffeting the land with each beat of his mighty wings. He consumed whole villages with his grisly maw and feasted on the knights who came to slay him. The dragon tore the earth asunder and boiled the clouds in the heavens. He was called the Purdragon, boiler of the skies. All was not lost, for among the trembling peasants was a man who walked upright and did not fear the Purdragon. Although this man required eight minutes to drain a shield full of mead, his heart was true and his sword arm was strong. He was known as Abosch. Abosch came before the queen and boldly claimed that he could defeat the Purdragon, and end its blight on the land. Though her other knights had failed, Queen Miley saw within this man an inner fortitude, and she stretched forth her hand and said, “Take this white horn to use as a blade, it is the horn of the White Rhino that my grandfather used in battle. Now go Abosch. Do the work of the Miley, and slay the beast. Like yeah.” The Purdragon and Abosch battled for eight days and eight nights, and their struggle shook the earth, causing mountains to shudder and the rivers to alter their course. Again and again the Purdragon bit at Abosch with is fangs, slashed at him with its claws, and whipped at him with his scaly tail, but again and again Abosch turned the blows of the Purdragon aside. On the eight night, Abosch stood alone on a windy summit as the Purdragon flew towards him. Abosch cast aside his rhino horn sword and gripped his trusty shield over his head, and he heaved it at the Purdragon. So mighty was the throw of Abosch that the shield turned upside down in the air, and came down from the clouds to smite the Purdragon directly between its beady evil eyes. So devastating was this blow that it was akin to the smashing of the hammer of the gods. So mighty was the hammer of Abosch that the dragon was instantly slain, and it’s body crashed into the side of the mountain, destroying the mountain upon which Abosch stood, and cascading rocks about him. Some say that Abosch the Purdragon slayer was crushed, and perished moments after his greatest triumph. Others say he wanders the world throwing shields at dragons. Still others say that Abosch resides on a peninsula in the shape of Queen Miley’s outstretched hand, and is now a student of one of the finest hammer throwers in all the lands. Those who know such things know that Abosch and the Purdragon never truly finished their battle, and that every clap of thunder is another blow from Abosch’s mighty shield, and every crack a lighting another snap from the dragon’s jaws.
